Steampunk Dorothy - AUSCON 2011 official figure

December 2010

32mm

In the first half of 2010 I was approached by the guys (Allan and Mark) from AUSCON about sculpting a special 'AUSCON figure' for the inaugral 2011 event, being held in Brisbane, Australia on the long weekend April 30 - May 2. Being approached in this way was a real thrill: it's an honour to be considered as a sculptor to make a figure in celebration of an event, and my full support was already behind AUSCON, so of course I agreed to go ahead with the project.

After discussing a few ideas, we decided to make a version of 'Dorothy' - the painting competition at AUSCON is called the 'Wizards of Oz' after all, and by choosing a character like Dorothy, there is plenty of scope for adding to the 'set' of figures in future years of AUSCON. But of course, we couldn't leave it as a simple Dorothy...and if in doubt, steampunk it! So the idea of a 'Steampunk Dorothy' was born, hehe ;)

This is a 32mm figure, and the basic structure was sculpted with super sculpey firm, then details added with pro-create and a pro-create milliput 50:50 mix.

The figure will be available as a limited edition resin at this year's (2011) AUSCON. There will only be 150 resin casts publicly available, and they will only be available for purchase in person at AUSCON. Following the event, there are plans to cast the figure in metal, and sell it through this site as part of the Guild of Harmony range.

I have to say a big thank you to Ed Fortae at Troll Forged Minis for doing a brilliant job with the casting, and being an all around nice-guy too :) Visit his website here: Troll Forged Minis

And again, I have to say thanks to Allan especially, for asking me to take part in the project - it was a real pleasure working with him, and I can't wait for AUSCON! :)
