White Speaker and The Old Death

My first vignette! The minis are, the White Speaker from Kingdom Death miniatures, and The Old Death from Enigma miniatures. The whole project, from construction to finish took about 30hrs. Which I guess, is pretty quick.

I first got the old death mini last year to be a practice mini, along with the liche king, to practice the texturing pattern, or similar effect, as shown in Seb's Telcharion article. Later, when the white speaker mini came out, I thought it would be a good opportunity to paint both up on the same base. I wanted the scene to show the two characters to be in league with each other, and I guess its a bit tricky because of where I had to place the minis on the scene. For starters, the old death had to be on slightly higher ground, since it would look wrong with the white speaker being higher. So, she ended up slightly in front, to the left, and on lower ground, sort of in a leading position. But the scene could be read in a different manner where she appears to be in a vulnerable situation, with a big nasty reaper behind and above her.

It was also fortunate that both minis have their cloaks blowing in the same direction, so I made sure most of the foliage looked like it was blown and swaying to the right.

To paint the cloak on the reaper, I first did the base colours, then added some shading and highlighting. Then I did some shading by flicking (splatter) dark colours onto shaded / recess areas and also onto the areas which were in between highlight and shade. Some of the dark splatter colours include dark blues, dark red, and brown. To splatter, I load the brush up, and then push against a toothpick for control. First, splatter onto paper to get rid of some of the paint, and when you notice the splatter pattern on paper is controllable, move onto the mini. I then splattered some highlight colours onto the raised areas. Unlike the liche king, I did not do any stippling on this one.
